Check out some of our eco-friendly programs, in Dining Services, and campus-wide:

  • All-in-One Recycling Program
  • Geothermal wells being utilized to transfer energy to and from the earth for cooling and heating our residence halls
  • Dump and Run, organized by Students for Recycling, recycles and reuses items donated during move-out
  • Many of the university's vehicles are capable of running on E85 (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) and all of the university's diesel vehicles are capable of running on B20 biodiesel. Dining Services fryer oil is recycled into biodiesel.
  • Four LEED-certified buildings and growing
  • Pre- and post-consumer waste pulping system for several of our dining operations. The pulper breaks down the organic material, which is then shipped to an off-site anaerobic digestion system and converted into biogas used to produce energy. This system reduces waste by up to 88% in volume.
  • Food initiatives include 30% of purchasing in Ohio, providing eco-friendly, biodegradable containers and utensils, and offering tray-less and bag-free service

And think about easy ways to go green with us:

  • Look for the Energy Star label when purchasing products
  • Choose laptops over desktops-they use 75% less energy (Don't forget a lock!)
  • Choose screen size carefully-a 17" monitor can use twice as much energy as a 15" monitor when in active mode
  • Activate your computer's power management options and set it to enter sleep mode when not in use
  • Choose flat-panel screens over CRT monitors (a 66% energy savings)
  • Choose ink-jet printers over laser printers-save 80-90% energy
  • Bring compact fluorescent light bulbs to use for your desk and other lamps
  • Turn off lights when you leave the room
  • Turn off the water when brushing your teeth
  • Consider participating in one of many Ohio State eco-friendly student organizations
  • Consider walking or bicycling while traveling on campus
  • Recycle all packaged products
  • Utilize reusable bags and beverage containers: Bring your reusable mug any time you plan on purchasing drip coffee or tea and we'll fill it up for the price of a small.
